Making a Masked Page Accent Area on a Scrapbook Page

Following on from the article showing the techniques used on the right hand scrapbooking page of the “Arrrrrhhh” double page layout, I thought I would share with you how I made the Page Accent Area on the left hand page.  Here is the double page layout, just to remind you…

So… here is the page accent area on the left hand page.

Firstly, the swirl I wanted to use was completely the wrong colour and so after sanding the surface, I started to use my ink pads to recolour it.  Unfortunately, my ink pads weren’t the right colour either, so in the end I resorted to using my aqua pencils and water colours that are in the same pack, to paint the surface.  When it was dry, which took only a couple of minutes, I added a thin line of 3D Gloss Finish, just to give some extra interest (you can just make this out in the picture above).

I cut out a mat to use for the embellishments, and I actually coloured it with inks, but I then decided that as the background paper was a bit bland I would decorate it using the masking technique, rather than just journal straight on.  I decided to use the mat as the mask to have some continuity of shape (the curved corners).

Below is the finished look after the masking technique and some doodled brush lines for added interest.

Once the masking lines were in place, I knew how much room I had to add journaling.  So, as I always recommend when I teach, I  roughly measured and then marked in pencil on some scrap paper, the area available to me on the scrapbooking page. I drafted what I wanted to write onto that first, to make sure I would have enough room on the “real thing”.  Only then did I write directly onto the page.

I mentioned earlier that I had already inked my embossed mat ready for embellishments and here it is below.  I then turned it over to use as a mask, that side wouldn’t be seen so that was a good idea!

But when I had finished using the back of it as a mask, I actually preferred the look of that side!!  And so that is what I used on the final scrapbook page!
